NSERC/Mine Radio Systems CRD Award

Dr. Xavier Fernando's team was awarded $200,000 in funding from NSERC and $200,000 from Mine Radio Systems for their Collaborative Research and Development (CRD) project titled, "Green, Hybrid Communication Network for Localization in Underground Mines". The project is expected improve the safety of miners and save energy in the mines.


IEEE EMBS CONFERENCE AWARD

Three days after returning from parental leave, and with babies on his mind, Dr. James Andrew Smith worked as part of the "Real-time interoperable remote diagnostic tool to support early detection of most prevalent defect in newborns" group that won second place in the IDEO-run Design Competition at the IEEE EMBS HIC 2012 conference in Houston, Texas. The group, led by Annamarie Saarinen of Newborn Coalition, will publish details in the IEEE Journal on Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine in 2013.


JASON WANG AWARDED RYERSON UNIVERSITY GOLD MEDAL

Jason Wang, PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded the Ryerson University Gold Medal.

The medal is the University's highest honor, awarded to students with outstanding academic achievement combined with outstanding involvement with the University, their profession, and/or the community. The medal was awarded during the convocation ceremony on Oct 17. He was co-supervised by Drs. Bin Wu and David Xu.

The award citation reads:

"Mr. Jiacheng Wang excelled in his PhD studies. Out of his PhD research, he has made several important contributions in the field of high-power converters for industrial energy systems, helping such systems to reduce costs and improve efficiency in different kinds of industrial applications. He has been an active volunteer in various conferences held university-wide or internationally by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In addition, he was a straight A+ student with the highest possible cumulative GPA of 4.33."

The June 28 National Post included an 8-page supplement (PDF) on Canadian medical technology innovation featuring a panel interview with Dr. Sri Krishnan and an advertisement announcing Ryerson's Biomedial Engineering Program as the first and only standalone program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.

ALL THREE PROGRAMS RECIEVE CEAB ACCREDITATION

The Computer Engineering program and Electrical Engineering program offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have successfully renewed their accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) with the highest rating.

The Biomedical Engineering program offered by the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture, and Science (FEAS) through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board with the highest rating that a new engineering program can ever receive.

The Biomedical Engineering program is the first and only standalone undergraduate biomedical engineering program in Canada.

Second Prize 2012 Minerva Award

The student design team of Igor Ivanecky and Elmer Atagu has won Second Prize in the 2012 Minerva Canada James Ham Safe Design Engineering Student Awards contest for their Capstone Design Project, iPhone Driver Alertness Monitoring System. The awards committee was impressed with their design of a driver fatigue alert monitoring system that used existing technology. The design was well thought out and can hopefully reduce driver fatalities from fatigue.

The $1,500 prize will be shared equally among the two team members and presented to them on May 28th at the Minerva Canada Summer Institute being held at the University of Toronto where they will be asked to say a few words about this award to engineering professors attending our Summer Institute. Their supervising professor for this project, Dr. Dimitri Androutsos, is also planning to attend.

2011 Graduate Research Excellence Awards

Graduate Research Excellence Awards (GREAs) promote scholarly research publications of graduate students in peer-reviewed main-stream scientific journals and conference proceedings. This year, there were 3 MASc. applications and 30 Ph.D. applications competing for 20 GREAs.


NSERC RESEARCH TOOLS AND INSTRUMENTS GRANT AWARD

May 7, 2012

Dr. Kristiina McConville, together with three other researchers, has been awarded an NSERC RTI grant for a Mixed-Reality Immersive Motion Simulator Facility, a 360 degree pitch and roll cockpit with HD video and surround sound. The award is a total of $195,000, with $150,000 from NSERC and the balance from Ryerson, including FEAS and VPRI.


2012 CAPSTONE DESIGN PROJECT AWARDS

Capstone Design Project Awards recognize the excellence of students in BME/CLE/ELE 700 (Engineering Design) and BME/CLE/ELE 800 (Design Projects). The winners of 2012 Capstone Design Project Awards were selected by a panel of 13 faculty who supervised design projects in 2011-2012 academic year.

Every project demonstrated in the Capstone Design Project Open House was evaluated by the faculty individually and independently during 2012 Capstone Design Project Open House. The choices were then compiled and the projects that received most of the votes were selected for the awards. Only projects that received a minimum grade of A-minus prior to the Open House qualified for the awards.

Dr. Kristiina McConville has been awarded an NSERC Engage grant entitled "Motion Theatre Book of Rules", in collaboration with Dynamic Structures Ltd. in Vancouver.

The research group is implementing the motion theatre demonstration in the Toronto Rehab virtual reality motion base facility. Dr. Fei Yuan has been awarded an NSERC Engage Grant for the project "Development of radio-frequency front-end of wireless personal Health Record (pHR) cards ", in collaboration with Kela Medical Inc., Whitby, Ont.

Dr. Sri Krishnan has been awarded an NSERC Engage Grant to collaborate with Dr. Mark Doidge, MD, President of Cerebral Diagnostics. The interdisciplinary biomedical project is titled "Real-time auditory display and recording of User-Selected Brain Wave Generators in the Cerebral Cortex"


Dr. Amirnaser Yazdani has been awarded an NSERC Engage Grant for the project, "Micro Hydroelectric Generators-Electrical/Generator Optimization", in collaboration with the Ontario-based company Bluestreak Equipment Inc.


OCE Funding Award

Dr. Reza Sedaghat has been awarded Ontario Centres of Excellence Proof of Principle funding to a maximum of $125,000, for the project, "High level synthesis design space exploration automation with multi-parametric optimization objective", in collaboration with MaRS Innovation and industry.

G. Gordon M. Sterling Engineering Intern Award

Behnaz Ghoraani, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department, has received the 2012 G. Gordon M. Sterling Engineering Intern Award, awarded annually by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) to an individual in his/her Engineering Internship Program (EIT) who demonstrates leadership potential within and outside of the engineering profession.

The award, worth $3500, is to be applied towards the cost of a leadership development course.


NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant

Dr. Fei Yuan has been awarded a NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grant for the project entitled "Charge-domain filtering and digitization techniques for reconfigurable radio-frequency transceivers", with funding of $135,000 over three years.

This research is a collaborative effort between Dr. Yuan and Kaben Wireless Silicon Inc., Ottawa, to develop next-generation radio-frequency transceivers for software-defined radios.


FEAS Service Recognition Award

Dr. Xavier Fernando received a Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science Service Recognition Award (2011) for his outstanding service to the Faculty, University and the profession at various levels.

The Service Recognition Awards were presented at the Senate meeting on January 24, 2012.


$1M NSERC/Rockwell IRC Renewal

Dr. Bin Wu has successfully renewed his NSERC Industrial Research Chair (IRC) with a $1 million research fund from both NSERC and his industrial partners, Rockwell.

The successful renewal of Dr. Wu's NSERC/Rockwell IRC is built upon his extremely impressive research record and industrial contributions during his current IRC.


Biophotonics and Bioengineering Lab Awards

Drs. Victor Yang, Beau A. Standish, and collaborators of the Biophotonics and Bioengineering Laboratory (BBL) have been awarded two grants (1) $177K from the Ontario Brain Institute and (2) $124K from NSERC I2I program.

The BBL is gaining international reputation and building a critical mass, with recent recruitment of one post-doctoral fellow from Germany and one post-doctoral fellow from North Carolina. Research programs in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Optical Topographical Imaging (OTI) are underway with biomedical applications at BBL, with clinical collaborators at St. Michael's Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

Lakshmi Sugavaneswaran's research work on, "Risk Assessment for Long-term Care: Participation in Strategies for Neuromuscular Disorder Prediction", has been awarded 3rd prize in the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care Conference on Managing Risk: Moving from Science to Practice, held in Toronto, March 29-31, 2011. Her Ph.D. research is supervised by Drs. S. Krishnan and K. Umapathy.
