Dec. 1, 2014

It is with great sadness and sorrow that our beloved colleague, Dr. Anastasios (Tas) Venetsanopoulos, has passed away. Dr. Venetsanopoulos had a long and distinguished career both at the University of Toronto as a Professor and the Dean of Engineering and at Ryerson University as a Professor and its founding Vice President, Research and Innovation.

An alumnus from Yale's University, Dr. Venetsanopoulos was an internationally renowned scholar and an authority on multimedia and signal processing with many prestigious recognitions including Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada, and the MacNaughton, the Centennial and Millennium Medals of IEEE. His work has been cited in over ten thousand research papers and four hundred textbooks. He has taught, inspired and mentored numerous graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

He was a brilliant and charismatic professor whose lasting legacy is the preparation of the next generation of engineers in North America and around the world. He will be deeply missed by all of us here in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
